Do You Have Goals for Your Health?
Last week I was doing a re-evaluation on a patient. She had been doing very well, her pain was gone and I was focused on moving her to the next stage of her care. We were sitting and speaking but after a very short time, it became apparent that she didn’t really have any health goals and just figured if “she wasn’t sick or in pain, that should be good enough.”
Her revelation was shocking to me. We all have health-related challenges. I just assumed that everyone sees the benefits of overcoming those issues and works towards that goal. When I suggested that she should take more control of her health and set some health related goals, she looked at me as if I was speaking another language. “Why would I need to have health goals?” she asked.
I had a personal realization after speaking with her. My attitude about health is so different than most because it comes from my perspective after 26 years taking care of people. I have seen the emotional, physical and financial costs of neglecting your health. There have been so many patients who have come to me over the years and lots of them ONLY came in when they were sick or in pain. Those same people almost always come back to me in the future with the same problems or something closely related.
Things like arthritis, back pain, neck pain, herniated or bulging discs all become much more severe if all you treat is the pain. Regular chiropractic care is critical to minimizing future damage. Also, taking long-term action on your own by eating right, exercising and sleeping enough makes huge a difference.
My suggestion for everyone is to have goals for your health. Plan what you are going to do every week and do your best to stick to the plan. Remember the benefits from this approach are less pain, fewer injuries and more time to live the life you want.
