My Commitment To You For 2013

Let’s face it, 2012 was a bit of a rough ride! Between the weather, a difficult economy and a disappointing showing of our local baseball and football teams, most of us aren’t going to be too sad to see last year go into the history books.

So bring on 2013! I am personally committing this year to do what I can to make it better for all of my patients!

MOST IMPORTANTLY, we are going to keep being the best place for you to come to get out of pain fast, without taking drugs. But I promise, we are not stopping there. This year I am going to make it a point to be in touch more often with the most up-to-date information about your health.

Besides continuing with our Facebook Page, Twitter and this blog , we also have added a whole lot more. First thing for you is our “Weekly Update”. This one page quickly gives you six different snippets of advice at a glance. To receive the “Weekly Health Update” every Monday by email, click here and enter Doctor Code: 07628SCHWA.

We also have our monthly “In Good Hands” newsletter. This piece is filled with information by contributors like Dr. Michael Roizen, M.D., chief wellness director of the Cleveland Clinic and co-author with Dr. Oz. Not only is this publication filled with interesting stories, but it gives you multiple tips on dealing with some of the most commonly faced health issues. To sign up for our monthly email newsletter, click here and enter Doctor Code: 07628SCHWA.

Finally, check out our new, second blog at DrDavidSchwartzBlog.com. Every week we update that blog with an article about a specific condition like lower back pain, neck pain or headaches.

You are probably wondering why I am providing you with so much information. Well, I’ve said it many times in the past and I am not changing my tune in 2013: the government and the insurance companies don’t care if you are sick or in pain! It is up to you to know how to stay healthy and pain-free. By providing you with the most up-to-date and practical information available, I want to help you do just that.

I am looking forward to this coming year and wish for it to be healthy and prosperous and pain-free.

Best Wishes,

Dr. David Schwartz, D.C.

Three Years of Pain Is a Long Time… Sports Injuries and Chiropractic Care

A patient recently referred his son to my office because of some neck and back pain. When I saw the young man, he told me that he also very frequently gets headaches.

It turns out that the whole issue began while he was still in high school and was related to some injuries he suffered while competing on his school wrestling team. Not an unusual thing considering how hard they push high school athletes these days. What shocked me was that the patient told me he had suffered 5-6 concussions during the season and his coach still allowed him to participate.

Ever since high school, he has been living with neck pain and moderate to severe headaches just about every other day. By the time he came to my office the problem had been going on for over three years! Nobody, not even his old coach or his primary doctor, ever suggested checking out the problem.

Thankfully, we found that some of the issues in his neck were related to the head pain and with a little bit of chiropractic care we have begun to see good results. His headaches are going away and his neck pain is stopping as well. There was no question that his pain is a result of the injuries he suffered while in high school. The things I wonder about are, why was nobody concerned enough to help this young man and how many other student athletes have had the same thing happen?

School sports are very competitive and even though coaches try to keep kids safe, injuries happen more and more often. These injuries can be serious and effect these kids for years to come.

If your children are participating in sports, getting their spine checked can be the difference between being pain-free or suffering from neck or back pain for the rest of their life. Don’t wait three years until you get help… call the Back Care Center of Dumont NJ to make an appointment today.

Should You Exercise When You’re Sick?

The choice to exercise or not sometimes depends on the sickness or disease. Our bodies work harder and use more energy when we are fighting an illness. If symptoms are above the neck (sore throat, runny nose), it is probably okay to exercise.

You should not exercise if you have body aches, fever, diarrhea or vomiting, shortness of breath or chest congestion, dizziness or light-headedness. In other words, if you have the Flu, stay in bed!

If you’re sick but still want to exercise, simply reduce your intensity and duration. When resuming your regular exercise routine, try starting with 50% effort and 50% duration.

And of course, if you are sick, make sure you come into the Back Care Center of Dumont, NJ for a chiropractic adjustment. It will help your immune system fight off whatever is attacking your system.

Are stiff necks, back pain and hip pain interfering with your golf swing?

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I went to visit my family and enjoy the warm weather in Florida. Part of the time I stayed at my parent’s house, which backs up onto a golf course. Sitting in the back yard I was often so close to the golfers it felt like I was part of their foursomes.

It was interesting watching so many different players and hearing their comments following the shot. A good golf swing depends on all of the parts of your body working together. It seemed that at least half the time, the players had some type of pain causing a “hitch” in their swing and affecting the shot.

Lower back pain and hip pain are common complaints and most golfers know it can ruin their game. It is why so many golfers come to me with pain from sprains, strains or even herniated discs. Using a combination of treatments including chiropractic adjustments, cold laser therapy, spinal decompression, massage and core exercises we get them back to their game.

Some of the golfers also seemed surprised how much swinging the club hurt their neck. After the shot I noticed many of them rubbing their neck or shoulders in obvious discomfort with a look of frustration over the difficulty they were having in hitting the ball solidly.

Limited motion, stiffness or pain in your neck prevents you from holding your head down and still while swinging. Some typical compensations include picking your head up, sliding backward, swaying forward or bending your elbows. There are various reasons for loss of motion in the neck, but with some proper golf fitness exercises and chiropractic care, we have helped many of our golfers get back to hitting the ball straighter and further, without all the pain.

If you would like us to help you get your golf game where it should be, give us a call at the Back Care Center of Dumont, NJ to set up an appointment.

Power Is Back On and Free Treatment for First Responders, PSEG, Emergency Workers

The power is finally back on at The Back Care Center of Dumont, NJ. And while we’ve been seeing and adjusting patients without the aid of lights, or heating pads, or KST, it will be nice to get back to normal.

That also means the spinal decompression table is running again, too, so I expect to see you all back here for your ongoing therapy.

One more thing: we want to say thank you to all of the people who’ve gotten us back on our feet. For the next two weeks  we will be treating for free any first responders, PSE&G employees, and out-of-town emergency repair workers who flew in or drove in to help us out.

You came through for us, and this is the least we can do to say thanks. We know your time is valuable, so call the office for an appointment so we can schedule your visit and get you in and out as fast as possible.

Have a great and healthy day!
Dr. David Schwartz

Sandy Knocked Us Down, But We’re Back Open, But No Power!

Hurt your back clearing damage from Superstorm Sandy? Or maybe sleeping in your basement or on the floor of a shelter has given you a stiff neck or sciatica?

We have no power, but Dr. David Schwartz is in the office and treating patients from Bergenfield, Bogota, Closter, Cresskill, Dumont, Englewood, Harrington Park, Haworth, New Milford, Ridgefield Park, Teaneck and Tenafly.

Please call the office before coming down.

Surviving Sandy… but the office is closed until power is back in Dumont, NJ!

We never seem to be prepared for storms like the one we just experienced. In the past 2 years, power outages, downed trees and damaged homes are all things to which we have become accustomed. Yet somehow, it is always shocking to us to see the effects of Mother Nature’s violence.

This time I have again lost power in both my home and my office. Unlike last year, the trees that fell missed my home, office and car. Aside from cleaning up some fallen branches, once the power is returned we will be able to get back to our work and our lives.

During the aftermath of Sandy, my thoughts and prayers are saved for those who have been less fortunate. So many people have suffered terrible losses to their homes, or even worse, their health. To all my friends, family and practice members, I only hope that you get through this challenging time with as few difficulties as possible and with your and your family’s health intact.

All the best,
Dr. David Schwartz

Because the office is without power, The Back Care Center of Dumont, NJ will be closed until power is restored, hopefully by Friday. Please call the office before coming down.

Life goes on after the pain is gone!

couple on bicycles living healthy lifestyle

People never stop surprising me. Some patients wait in pain for days, weeks or even months before they come to me for help. When they finally make an appointment, the reason for their delay was that someone had told them, “Once you start seeing a chiropractor, you have to go forever!”

I can tell you that no two patients are really alike, but we can group them into three general categories. The first group wants nothing more than to get out of pain fast. The second group is looking for an overall improvement in their vitality. They not only get adjusted but also work on all other aspects of their health. The third group is a combination of the first two. They want to get out of pain but also want to enjoy the benefits longer-term chiropractic care can provide. They come in periodically to check and maintain their spine.

I take care of all three types of patients. While certain issues like a herniated disc may require longer term care, typically patients get out of pain relatively fast. If they are in the first group I described and want to stop after their pain is relieved, there is no “penalty.” They go back to their life and hopefully back to doing the things they love. I am thrilled to have helped them get what they wanted, and if they ever need me again, they are always welcome to come into the office.

If you are suffering with neck pain, back pain or sciatica, or know someone else who is, please let us help. Give us a call today. The sooner we get started, the sooner the pain will be gone.
