Can Chiropractic Help With Headaches?

When people ask us whether chiropractic can help when it comes to headache management, our answer is, “Absolutely.”

But for some people, that’s not enough. There are many headache sufferers who have never been to a chiropractor or have not even ever considered it as an option.

The good news is that there is more than enough support in the scientific community to satisfy anyone as to whether chiropractic treatment can help with headaches.

In a meta-analysis conducted in 2011, researchers reviewed journals published through 2009. They found 21 articles that met their inclusion criteria and used the results to develop treatment recommendations.

  • There is scientific literature that supports utilizing chiropractic care for the treatment of migraine headaches of either episodic or chronic migraine.
  • Similarly, they found articles supporting the chiropractic treatment of cervicogenic headaches, or headaches arising from the neck region.
  • In addition, joint mobilization (the “non-cracking” type of neck treatment such as figure 8 stretching and manual traction) or strengthening of the deep neck flexor muscles may improve symptoms in those suffering from cervicogenic headaches as well.
  • Finally, they found that low load craniocervical mobilization might be helpful for longer-term management of patients with episodic or chronic tension-type headaches where manipulation was found to be less effective.

Now, some of you are scratching your heads, wondering what all that means. It means that for some people, chiropractic care can help with headaches, and it can do it without serious drugs and their not-very-pleasant side effects.

The bottom line is that when people ask you why are going to a chiropractor for your headaches, you can say that not only do you know that it helps, but also that there are many scientific studies that say that, too.

5 Important Tips To Remember When Shoveling Snow

5 Tips for Shoveling Snow from The Back Care Center of Dumont, NJ

When you're out there shoveling snow, remember these 5 Tips from The Back Care Center of Dumont, NJ

There is no denying it:  winter is here and the weather is rotten! The news stations keep telling us this storm will be the most recent “Worst Storm Ever” and to stay inside. I think they’d be thrilled if you didn’t even look outside your window and kept watching them report on the storm!

Eventually you are going to have to leave your home and go outside. It may not be today, but when you do there is a pretty good chance that there will be some snow waiting for you. Which means, soon it is going to be time to shovel some snow.

I want to remind you of a few tips to remember to avoid ending up in pain:

5 Tips for Shoveling Snow

  1. Have a good shovel that is long enough so you don’t have to bend too much.
  2. Push the snow and avoid lifting it.
  3. If you have to lift the snow, keep it close to your body and try not to go for the distance record when you throw it.
  4. If you feel dizzy, light-headed or out of breath, stop shoveling.
  5. If you do hurt your back or your neck, put an icepack on the area for 15 minutes/hour.

Enjoy the snow,

Dr. David Schwartz, D.C.

Three Years of Pain Is a Long Time… Sports Injuries and Chiropractic Care

A patient recently referred his son to my office because of some neck and back pain. When I saw the young man, he told me that he also very frequently gets headaches.

It turns out that the whole issue began while he was still in high school and was related to some injuries he suffered while competing on his school wrestling team. Not an unusual thing considering how hard they push high school athletes these days. What shocked me was that the patient told me he had suffered 5-6 concussions during the season and his coach still allowed him to participate.

Ever since high school, he has been living with neck pain and moderate to severe headaches just about every other day. By the time he came to my office the problem had been going on for over three years! Nobody, not even his old coach or his primary doctor, ever suggested checking out the problem.

Thankfully, we found that some of the issues in his neck were related to the head pain and with a little bit of chiropractic care we have begun to see good results. His headaches are going away and his neck pain is stopping as well. There was no question that his pain is a result of the injuries he suffered while in high school. The things I wonder about are, why was nobody concerned enough to help this young man and how many other student athletes have had the same thing happen?

School sports are very competitive and even though coaches try to keep kids safe, injuries happen more and more often. These injuries can be serious and effect these kids for years to come.

If your children are participating in sports, getting their spine checked can be the difference between being pain-free or suffering from neck or back pain for the rest of their life. Don’t wait three years until you get help… call the Back Care Center of Dumont NJ to make an appointment today.

Should You Exercise When You’re Sick?

The choice to exercise or not sometimes depends on the sickness or disease. Our bodies work harder and use more energy when we are fighting an illness. If symptoms are above the neck (sore throat, runny nose), it is probably okay to exercise.

You should not exercise if you have body aches, fever, diarrhea or vomiting, shortness of breath or chest congestion, dizziness or light-headedness. In other words, if you have the Flu, stay in bed!

If you’re sick but still want to exercise, simply reduce your intensity and duration. When resuming your regular exercise routine, try starting with 50% effort and 50% duration.

And of course, if you are sick, make sure you come into the Back Care Center of Dumont, NJ for a chiropractic adjustment. It will help your immune system fight off whatever is attacking your system.

Are stiff necks, back pain and hip pain interfering with your golf swing?

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I went to visit my family and enjoy the warm weather in Florida. Part of the time I stayed at my parent’s house, which backs up onto a golf course. Sitting in the back yard I was often so close to the golfers it felt like I was part of their foursomes.

It was interesting watching so many different players and hearing their comments following the shot. A good golf swing depends on all of the parts of your body working together. It seemed that at least half the time, the players had some type of pain causing a “hitch” in their swing and affecting the shot.

Lower back pain and hip pain are common complaints and most golfers know it can ruin their game. It is why so many golfers come to me with pain from sprains, strains or even herniated discs. Using a combination of treatments including chiropractic adjustments, cold laser therapy, spinal decompression, massage and core exercises we get them back to their game.

Some of the golfers also seemed surprised how much swinging the club hurt their neck. After the shot I noticed many of them rubbing their neck or shoulders in obvious discomfort with a look of frustration over the difficulty they were having in hitting the ball solidly.

Limited motion, stiffness or pain in your neck prevents you from holding your head down and still while swinging. Some typical compensations include picking your head up, sliding backward, swaying forward or bending your elbows. There are various reasons for loss of motion in the neck, but with some proper golf fitness exercises and chiropractic care, we have helped many of our golfers get back to hitting the ball straighter and further, without all the pain.

If you would like us to help you get your golf game where it should be, give us a call at the Back Care Center of Dumont, NJ to set up an appointment.
