As Mother’s Day is approaching, The Back Care Center in Dumont is again working to help troubled families in the Bergen County area with their annual fund raising drive benefiting “Center for Hope and Safety”.

The Back Care Center Donating Chiropractic care

Center For Hope and Safety Charity fund raiser

This Year, May 8th-13th, Dr. David Schwartz, of The Back Care Center in Dumont NJ will again be donating his time to help raise awareness and much needed funds for CHS. However, for the first time, Chiropractic offices around the country will also do the same for shelters in their local region.

All new patients in exchange for a $50 donation to the center will receive a full chiropractic examination, any needed digital x-rays, a report of examination findings and a gift certificate for a ½ hour massage (normally valued at $305). Existing patients will be able to make a $20 donation in exchange for an adjustment (normally $60). All donations will go to CHS.

“Right after my daughter was born I started donating my time to this cause” said Dr. Schwartz. “The idea of a woman or a child being hurt and having no option and no safe haven is simply unacceptable.”

If you would like to contribute or make an appointment with Dr. Schwartz, call his office at 201-387-7463.

Understanding Sciatica

Sciatica at The Back Care Center of Dumont, NJEvery couple of weeks we make it a point to educate our practice members about a particular symptom. This week we focused on a very painful symptom called “Sciatica”.

The sciatic nerve is formed from the combining of several different lower back nerve roots. It is the largest nerve in the body. When something happens to irritate or pinch that nerve people will experience pain, tingling or even a burning sensation, traveling from the lower back or buttock down to the back of the thigh and sometimes all the way to the foot (Sciatica).

People with sciatica often find sitting or standing extremely painful. Working can become impossible and as the pain becomes worse over time, any movement results in new spasms of pain shooting from the back down the leg.

There are many reasons for sciatica. Two of the most common causes are spinal subluxation (misaligned spinal bones) and nerve pressure from a herniated or bulging disc (the spongy shock-absorber between spinal bones).

As a chiropractor, I have over 25 years of experience taking care of subluxations. Using a variety of different methods, I can gently and safely move spinal bones back into their normal position, un-pinching nerves and relieving pain. Additionally, in our office we do mechanical spinal decompression to fix disc problems without using drugs to cover the pain or dangerous surgeries.

Personally, I have had the problem and know how painful sciatica can be. When I was 16 years old, I was told by an orthopedist that surgery was the only way for me to be rid of my leg and back pain. Eventually, though, it was a chiropractor who helped me, which eventually led to my choice of career. If you know of someone suffering with sciatic pain don’t wait, call them today and send them to our office for help.

How Diet Contributes to Arthritis Pain

How Diet Contributes to Arthritis, from The Back Care Center of Dumont, NJThere are many different types of arthritis but most of us don’t care if it is degenerative or autoimmune arthritis. It’s the pain and stiffness that gets our attention. As the condition goes on, joints become swollen and inflamed and any type of movement or activity can become difficult

Medical treatment has been the same for years. Treat the swollen joints with drugs like steroids or “NSAIDs” and hope for the best. The problem is that nobody tries to find out why the problem has happened and, over time, the effects of those drugs can make the problems worse.

So why do your joints get swollen? One reason is that many people have hypersensitive immune systems. Your own defense system is so revved up that the slightest irritation triggers a very strong reaction. Since about 95% of your immune system is in your gut, your diet is an important key to controlling the problem.

Eating healthy foods like fruits and vegetables will nourish your body and improve healing. However, eating the wrong foods like wheat, processed sugar and dairy can irritate your immune system causing inflammation and lead to joint and muscle pain. You don’t even have to be suffering with belly problems for it to happen.

In our office we correct mechanical problems of the spine by using chiropractic adjustments and therapeutic exercises. Fixing the mechanical cause of irritation helps to get rid of your pain and restore your health. But looking at what foods (and sometimes drugs) patients are putting into their body is an important part of treatment and is why our arthritis patients get great results.

Kinesio Tape: Not just for superstar athletes!

I love using the tape with my patients. Ever since I introduced Kinesio Taping at The Back Care Center of Dumont, NJ in January of this year, I’ve been seeing excellent results. All sorts of conditions have been getting better faster than ever since we added this to the practice.

It’s great to take something that works for so many elite athletes and use it to help my patients get out of pain and hold their adjustments longer.

Kinesio Taping was developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase in 1979 and is being used by the world’s top professional athletes such as Serena Williams, Lance Armstrong and David Beckham. College teams, like the University of Connecticut men’s basketball team, use Kinesio taping with their players to treat injuries and enhance performance.

Lance Armstrong and the US Postal Cycling Team use Kinesio Tape, just like we do at The Back Care Center of Dumont, NJ

It seems that everywhere you look competitive athletes can be seen wearing colorful pieces of tape on a shoulder or elbows or knees, even the Olympics. But for all the college and pro players using the tape, there are many more “regular folks” who have discovered just how useful Kinesio taping is to them.

Introducing Kinesio Taping at The Back Care Center of Dumont, NJ

As some of you already know, I have been using a new technique, Kinesio Taping, to help patients with necks, shoulders, hands and lower backs. Kinesio Tape is a self adhesive, elastic tape that can be used in a variety of beneficial ways.

When applied correctly, the tape can help with pain and swelling. It can be used to strengthen weak muscles or give ones that are working too hard a rest. I use Kinesio Taping for my patients to help them hold their adjustments longer and enhance the healing effect of care.

With the tape, my patients say it feels like I’m still working on them even when they’ve gone home. The combination of chiropractic adjustments with taping is making care better than ever and the results are speaking for themselves.

You can read more about Kinesio Taping here, or on the website of its inventor, Dr. Kenzo Kase. And if you’re interested in finding out whether your recovery can be assisted through Kinesio Taping, call us for an appointment.
