Why Do I Do It?

I can be a bit introspective at times and occasionally have even wondered how I ended up in my profession.  Happily, I never had to question if becoming a chiropractor was good decision.

Contemplating my life, chiropractic and health

Contemplating my life, chiropractic and health

When I was young, I hurt my back and went to a chiropractor for help.  Later, I went to chiropractic college because I thought being a doctor would be a good career.  Also, I hoped to make a good living.  More than 30 years later, I have learned a few things.  First, this job is much harder than I expected.  Second, there are easier ways in the world to make a living.  Third and most importantly, I also learned the reasons chiropractic was the perfect choice for me.

When a patient came in with back pain and told me that she can no longer play with her kids, I truly sympathized.  I am a dad and know how precious time is with your child.   A month later, when I saw her running with her children at a local playground, I watched and felt part of the joy she was experiencing.  When someone who suffered 3 or 4 migraines a week happily told me that for the first time in several years they had been free of headaches for 2 weeks, I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.

A few years ago, the husband of a patient stopped me while I was out at a local community fair.  Prior to coming to me, his wife had been in pain for a long time and it was affecting their relationship.  He said he wanted to thank me for giving his wife back to him and his daughter.  Knowing how I contributed to them almost brought me to tears.

Over my years in practice, there have been hundreds of patients who have had life changing experiences.  People who have come to me with conditions like sciatica, neck pain, back pain and other disabilities or illnesses, have all recovered.  Many have avoided taking harmful medications or having dangerous surgeries by instead choosing The Back Care Center for chiropractic care.

My reasons for being a chiropractor have changed since I first started school.  Now every life I have touched and changed is a reason for me to be happy.  My life changes with my patients’ successes.

If you or someone you know and love is suffering and looking for a solution to their pains, give us a call at 201-387-7463.  Let’s find out if we can help.

The Easy Path

Path towards Health

Sometimes, I want to take the easier path in the office and let my patients decide for themselves what type of care they should get. I don’t want to explain that, just because their pain is better, their problem may not be gone. Very often this approach backfires on me but more importantly, it hurts my patients.

This happened again just recently. A gentleman from Dumont has been coming to me for years to take care of his back. Because of his work schedule, he has been very irregular with his care. Even though he has bad spinal problems, he sometimes would go months without getting adjusted.

A couple of months ago he hurt his lower back again. This was the worst I had ever seen him. The pain was so severe that I had to see him twice a day for a week. Every time he moved, his entire back would spasm and at times I had to hold him up, so he didn’t fall down from the pain. After a couple of weeks, he finally was better enough to return to work and within three weeks, he was almost completely pain free.

This time I didn’t want to make the same mistake I had in the past. I told him, “you need to be here for your adjustments, regardless of your work schedule.” He agreed and the change that regular care has made in his spine is remarkable. He even told me that “this is the best my back has felt in years.”

After over 30 years of practice, I think I have learned to stop making this mistake. Taking the easier path just isn’t always the best one.

If you or someone you know is suffering with back or neck pain, the first call you should make should be to a chiropractor. Feel free to reach out to us at The Back Care Center at 201-387-7463. We have been taking care of people from Dumont and the surrounding towns in Bergen for over 30 years, and we would be happy to help you too.

The Back Care Center Donating Chiropractic care

Center For Hope and Safety Charity fund raiser

This Year, May 8th-13th, Dr. David Schwartz, of The Back Care Center in Dumont NJ will again be donating his time to help raise awareness and much needed funds for CHS. However, for the first time, Chiropractic offices around the country will also do the same for shelters in their local region.

All new patients in exchange for a $50 donation to the center will receive a full chiropractic examination, any needed digital x-rays, a report of examination findings and a gift certificate for a ½ hour massage (normally valued at $305). Existing patients will be able to make a $20 donation in exchange for an adjustment (normally $60). All donations will go to CHS.

“Right after my daughter was born I started donating my time to this cause” said Dr. Schwartz. “The idea of a woman or a child being hurt and having no option and no safe haven is simply unacceptable.”

If you would like to contribute or make an appointment with Dr. Schwartz, call his office at 201-387-7463.

Why I Think It’s So Important to Support “Shelter Our Sisters”

Shelter Our Sisters, a Bergen County nonprofit providing safe housing, hotline counseling, and life-changing support services to women and children. This week is our annual fundraiser for Shelter Our Sisters.

Shelter Our Sisters is the amazing organization that provides safe havens in Bergen County for victims of domestic violence. Every year I am excited to raise money for them but always wish I could give them more.

Without Shelter Our Sisters, so many people would be trapped in abusive situations with no place to turn. Personally, the thought of children forced to grow up in these types of violent homes is too much for me to contemplate and I believe anyone with a young child can understand my sentiment.

Through May 14th we are donating services in the office in exchange for donations to Shelter Our Sisters. Existing practice members can get adjusted (up to $80 normally) for a $25 donation and ANYONE can have their spine evaluated (including x-rays – up to $255 normally) for a $35 donation.

Please help us make this year a great success. If it’s been a while since you had a chiropractic adjustment or had your spine checked, call the office at 201-387-7463 to make an appointment.

It’s A Wonderful Life – Happy Holidays – Holiday Schedule

Scene from the movie, "It's a Wonderful Life", which inspired Dr. David Schwartz of The Back Care Center to write this post.

Happy Holidays to all my friends and practice members.  Hopefully you’re enjoying the season’s festivities.  One of my favorite movies at this time of year is “It’s A Wonderful Life” with Jimmy Stewart.  I haven’t seen it yet this year but I started wondering what would life be like if someone important to me simply had never existed, just like in the movie.

One person that popped into my head right away was my first chiropractor.  Without him, my life would be very different.  With his help I didn’t need back surgery when I was a kid and have been able to live an active life, enjoying things like golf, tennis, skiing, rollerblading, swimming and working out.

Because of my positive experience with him, I eventually became a chiropractor,  set up a practice and ended up living in Dumont.  I was where I needed to be to meet my wife Marina, get married and have my daughter, Maya.  Over the 25+ years I have been in practice, thousands of patients with back pain, neck pain, headaches and sciatica have come to my office and fortunately I have been able to help most of them.

It makes me realize how important one man was to my life and I wonder how many others, like me, he affected as well.  If he ever gets a chance to look back at his life, I hope he can see his impact and say “It’s A Wonderful Life.”

All the best to you during the holiday season, from Dr. David Schwartz and the staff of The Back Care Center of Dumont, NJ.

Stay in the Race – How Chiropractic Adjustments Can Help

Stay in the race with Chiropractic adjustments like my patients did at the Spartan Race shown here

Last weekend there was a “Spartan Race” in Killington, Vermont. For those who are not familiar with this type of race, there are obstacles along the way like walls to get over, fire to jump, water to cross, hills to climb and things to carry. This particular race is hardest of all the Spartan events, was about 15 miles long and is called “The Beast”.

These races have become very popular and I know lots of people who are doing them, including many of my patients. Two of them came to me last week. Less than a week before the race something happened to them. One had severe lower back pain and the other had middle back and shoulder pain. Both of them were very concerned because they felt the pain was so bad that they might not be able to do the race.

Luckily, I was able to get them moving and out of pain with a couple of chiropractic adjustments and they both finished in good form. I was so excited when I learned of their results. They had trained very hard for the race and being able to help them get out there and reach their goal is one reason I love being a chiropractor.

Helping athletes is fun, and over the years I have helped people with injuries from activities like bike riding to golfing to football. But for me, helping ANYONE get back to doing something they love and want to do is thrilling. Things like, gardening, taking care of a family, cooking and working are just as important as finishing a race or winning the next football game.

Chiropractic care really is for everyone and is frequently exactly what is needed to help people get over the hills and hurdles that life can throw at us. If you or someone you know needs some help getting back to something they love, give us a call at 201-387-7463 at the Back Care Center of Dumont, NJ so we can help them too.

Why a Back Injury Is Like a Ball Rolling Down a Hill

Why back pain is like a ball rolling down a hill

Sometimes injuries happen quickly. They are the result of an accident or a fall, and the pain is obvious and immediate. But many back problems are more subtle.

I like to explain it to my patients with the analogy of rolling a ball down a hill.

If a ball is sitting at the top of a hill, all you need to do is give it a small push and gravity does the rest. At first it doesn’t look like much. If the hill isn’t too steep you may not see much movement. It may get held up by some tall grass or get stuck in a small hole. But just one or two tiny pushes and it starts again, gathering speed and before you know it, that ball is out of your control and flying down the hill.

Most back injuries start off the same way. Slowly, hardly moving at all but gathering momentum until they are out of control and the pain is severe.

It is only when the pain gets out of control that most patients even notice that there is a problem. Then they come to The Back Care Center with injuries that have been developing for a long time. We can almost always help with their pain, but depending on the how long the condition has existed and how “far down the hill” they have gone, sometimes we can’t push that ball all the way to the top of the hill again. For some people the best we can do is to stop the rolling and keep them from going further down the hill.

But there’s more to it than that. Once we have helped with the pain, the ball is still sitting on a hill, but we’ve stopped it from rolling further down the hill by putting our foot on the ball. If we take our foot off, the ball slowly begins to roll down the hill again and before you know it, the pain is back and getting worse faster than ever.

That is why we continue to see and adjust patients even after they have gotten out of pain, and why we give them exercises to increase their strength. Because if we just ignore they problem, then we’re letting that ball start rolling down that hill again, and it’s only a matter of time before the problem is worse than ever.
