Why Did Your Chiropractor Take X-rays?

Chiropractic and X-rays

I have been a chiropractor for over 30 years and have been at The “Back Care Center” in Dumont since 1990.  In all those years I have seen thousands of patients from areas like Bergenfield, New Milford, Cresskill and Tenafly.  With almost all of them, I either took spinal x-rays myself or saw x-rays taken by another doctor.

Being honest, some of my patients don’t want x-rays. While I understand their concerns, I usually insist they are done, because it is in the best interest of the patient.  X-rays are an important diagnostic tool and there have been so many patients whose findings significantly alter their treatment path.

In most people we find some bio-mechanical issues.  These usually confirm what we suspected from the initial examination.  However, in some there are things like infections, severe degenerative arthritis, fractures and even cancers.  Without taking this extra step of x-rays, we would never have known of other underlying health issues and it would have delayed them receiving appropriate treatment.

Even in patients without severe findings, their x-rays help to determine our plan and the length of their treatment.

Some offices don’t take x-rays.  They say the insurance companies don’t want you to x-ray the patient right away.  Others think, I can always x-ray the patient later.  My answer is, I don’t treat insurance companies, I treat patients.  To provide safe and effective care, I want all the information before I put my hands on someone’s spine.

My suggestion to anyone who has things like back pain, sciatica, neck pain or headaches is to find a chiropractor.  We are very effective at helping these types of issues.  My other suggestion is never let a chiropractor who doesn’t do a full evaluation, including x-rays, touch your spine.  If you would like more information about chiropractic care, call us at The Back Care Center at 201-387-7463.

The Magic Pill

81MdT65IfFL._RI_SX200_A patient suggested I was a movie on Netflix called, “The Magic Pill”. Both He and I were struck by a line in the beginning of the film.

The narrator stated “When you look at every other species on our planet, they all control their weight automatically. The only exception was us (humans) and any animal unfortunate enough to be fed by us.”

The statement is painful to contemplate. Obesity is related to so many chronic health issues. To not actively address these health concerns, is almost like planning to become sick. While the movie spoke about the health benefits of a Ketogenic diet, I am not advocating that approach for all my patients. Instead, I recognize that there are multiple ways to modify diet, exercise and lifestyle.

We utilize a variety of tools to help our patients deal with this problem and assist with chronic disease like arthritis, cardiovascular diseases and auto-immune conditions. Our plans are customized for our individual patients but include nutritional advice, chiropractic, exercise and stress management.

If you or someone you know in the Dumont, Cresskill, Tenafly or Englewood areas is suffering with obesity and chronic illness, we may be able to help. Gives us a call at 201-387-7463

The Easy Path

Path towards Health

Sometimes, I want to take the easier path in the office and let my patients decide for themselves what type of care they should get. I don’t want to explain that, just because their pain is better, their problem may not be gone. Very often this approach backfires on me but more importantly, it hurts my patients.

This happened again just recently. A gentleman from Dumont has been coming to me for years to take care of his back. Because of his work schedule, he has been very irregular with his care. Even though he has bad spinal problems, he sometimes would go months without getting adjusted.

A couple of months ago he hurt his lower back again. This was the worst I had ever seen him. The pain was so severe that I had to see him twice a day for a week. Every time he moved, his entire back would spasm and at times I had to hold him up, so he didn’t fall down from the pain. After a couple of weeks, he finally was better enough to return to work and within three weeks, he was almost completely pain free.

This time I didn’t want to make the same mistake I had in the past. I told him, “you need to be here for your adjustments, regardless of your work schedule.” He agreed and the change that regular care has made in his spine is remarkable. He even told me that “this is the best my back has felt in years.”

After over 30 years of practice, I think I have learned to stop making this mistake. Taking the easier path just isn’t always the best one.

An Alternative To Opioid Addiction for Back Pain

Chiropractic is the largest and safest drug free health care profession in the world. While medicine works to deal with the mistakes they have made of over utiizing opioid medications, chiropractors continue to provide effective relief from pain without running the risk of destroying lives due to permanent drug addiction.

As the addiction crisis continues to grow, many state and national organizations are calling upon chiropractors to help patients deal with pain, before they take the risk of using a potentially addictive medication.

The Back Care Center in Dumont has been safely taking care of back pain patients without resorting to medications.

Our goals are:

  • Find the source of the pain
  • Correct the problem
  • Give our patients tools to assist in their recovery
  • Get patients back to their lives without limitations

Our results over the past almost 30 years have been fabulous.

If you or someone you know is suffering from lower back pain, don’t let them become another victim of medical pain relief. Let them know the facts and that there is safe alternative available to them today.  Reach out to our office by calling 201-387-7463 or emailing us at info@thebackcarecenter.com

What Are You Made Of?

I am happy to announce that The Back Care Center has recently added a valuable new tool to help you achieve a healthier and pain-free life style.  We have just acquired a “Rice-Lake,” D-1000 Bio-Impedance Analyzer.  This is a medical-grade device which gives an accurate assessment of exactly what is going on inside of you.

Your body is made up of bones, organs, muscles and fat.  However, the percentage of fat versus the percentage of lean mass (the rest of your body) is critically important to your health.  Typically, your doctor only estimates these percentages.  They use only three factors, your sex, height and weight.  Looking at these, they can establish your Body Mass Index (BMI).

The real value of BMI is to life insurance companies, which use it to determine if you are at risk of an early death, due to a heart attack or a stroke.  The problem with relying upon BMI is that some people have greater amounts of muscle and others have greater amounts of fat.  In other words, relying upon BMI alone does not give an accurate assessment of your health.

With our medical grade Bio-Electrical Impedance device, we can accurately help you determine your percentage of lean body mass.  This gives you information you need to create a program customized towards improving your body composition, preventing cardiovascular conditions and relieving pain associated with chronic inflammation.

The Back Care Center Donating Chiropractic care

Center For Hope and Safety Charity fund raiser

This Year, May 8th-13th, Dr. David Schwartz, of The Back Care Center in Dumont NJ will again be donating his time to help raise awareness and much needed funds for CHS. However, for the first time, Chiropractic offices around the country will also do the same for shelters in their local region.

All new patients in exchange for a $50 donation to the center will receive a full chiropractic examination, any needed digital x-rays, a report of examination findings and a gift certificate for a ½ hour massage (normally valued at $305). Existing patients will be able to make a $20 donation in exchange for an adjustment (normally $60). All donations will go to CHS.

“Right after my daughter was born I started donating my time to this cause” said Dr. Schwartz. “The idea of a woman or a child being hurt and having no option and no safe haven is simply unacceptable.”

If you would like to contribute or make an appointment with Dr. Schwartz, call his office at 201-387-7463.

A Sad Story about Back Surgery

A patient from Cresskill came in recently with a sad story. He told me he used to be a runner until herniating a disc in his lower back. The pain started slowly but very soon it had progressed enough to make even walking too painful to bear. He didn’t want to give up running so he tried resting, physical therapy and even pain management. Nothing really worked and eventually he ended up having back surgery.

His surgeon promised to do his best to help get him back to running. However a very short time after the surgery, the pain in my patient’s lower back and down his leg (sciatica) had returned. The only suggestion he got from his doctor was to have more surgery and to remove another disc.

The patient came to me desperate to avoid another failed back surgery and hoping to MAYBE get back to running a bit. The past surgery made it a more difficult case but after examining his spine and looking at his MRI, I placed him on a program of soft instrument adjustments, cold laser and spinal decompression using our “Discforce” table.

After a very short period of time, the pain had practically disappeared in both his back and in his leg. We have started him on his core training program and have high hopes we will be able help him to start running again.

Back surgery is almost always a last resort. Just about half of the time, lower back disc surgeries fail within the first year and leave the patient worse off than they started. Fortunately, our office has the tools to help most who are thinking about having back surgery. If you are thinking that surgery is your answer, give us a call to find out if you are a candidate for our program. Maybe we can give your story a happy ending!

One Answer to the Growing Opioid Epidemic: Chiropractic Care

I am a fan of John Oliver’s HBO show “Last Week Tonight”. His way of adding humor to current news and issues is very entertaining. Recently he did a piece about increased levels of addiction to prescription pain medications and the related increase in the numbers of people turning to heroin as an alternative when they can no longer get their medication legally.

The issue is not new. President Obama has been criticized for not being more aggressive in fighting this growing problem during his time in office. Additionally, our current presidential hopefuls have both commented on the problem in their bid for the White House.

The problem is already huge and growing fast. As stated on Oliver’s show, as of 2015 it’s estimated that 2.6 million people in the US are addicted to these types of drugs and nationwide over 30,000 deaths a year involve prescription opioids or heroin. They also brought up that an estimated 75% of current heroin users started with prescription opioid pain killers (like Oxycodone, Vicodin and Percocet). Because the pharmaceutical companies have been making so much money from the problem, it doesn’t look like it is going to end any time soon.

About a year ago, the CDC recommended that doctors utilize non-opioid medication for chronic pain. Many doctors voiced concern over the recommendation and on Oliver’s show, a pain management specialist was complaining that alternatives to these types of drugs are often not available.

It was at that point that the show became less entertaining than normally. As a practicing chiropractor, I know that chiropractic adjustments are about 80-85% effective for back and neck pain. There are no side effects from adjustments and you can’t become addicted to chiropractic care. Additionally, chiropractic services are available in every area of our country. So, I can’t understand why the medical community is so focused upon pushing these addictive drugs and why they believe that there are no available alternatives.

Chiropractic care is by far the best, most affordable and safest answer to chronic back and neck pain. Maybe it is time for the medical community, the drug companies, the media and even our politicians to pay better attention.

A Hawk Doesn’t Resent Gravity!

This past Sunday I was out riding my bicycle in Washington Township and was struggling up a pretty steep hill. I was about half way up and could see the top. My legs were hurting, I was breathing hard and all I could think was “I really hate gravity.”

Suddenly a hawk leapt from its perch on a low tree branch and passed in front of me just a few feet off the ground. It flapped furiously to gain some height and just managed to clear the trees in front of me. I watched as it kept on climbing until it was high enough to begin circling and gliding.

As I watched the hawk fly, I realized that unlike me on my bike, it didn’t seem to resent the gravity: it just did what it had to do to get high enough to fly and hunt. I felt inspired by the thought and I pushed my way up the hill.

During the rest of the ride, I had time to think. Many of us spend time resenting things we need to do instead of just doing what needs to be done. It doesn’t matter how important the issue, there always seems to be a reason why we avoid getting it accomplished. So it really isn’t a surprise that when it comes to health, some people don’t want to do what’s necessary.

When patients come into my office with pain, my job is to evaluate their problem and create a plan for a solution. If I am going to help, they have to stick to the plan and do things like keep their appointments, do their exercises, and make changes to their diet. Most work with me and get positive results; however, some resent the process, don’t follow through with the plan, and never get better.

If you are suffering with something like neck pain or back pain and it is stopping you from doing the things you love, you can do something about it. But if you decide to improve your health, then don’t get frustrated by the process. Pedal harder and get to the top of your hill.

We may not be able to help you fly like a hawk, but we can help you get the relief you need.
