Deductible Doubts

insurance-deductible croppedWith the beginning of the year, most insurance companies make patients pay their deductible before they begin to cover any medical services. Every year this happens, and every year patients are confused about why their company is not paying any bills.

A deductible is a specified amount of money that a patient must pay before an insurance company pays a claim. The amount of the deductible is different for every policy. Years ago, they were commonly small.  Some were as low as $100.  However, things have changed and they now may be as high as $3000-$10,000.

Occasionally someone will say they don’t want chiropractic care until they meet their deductible. What they don’t understand is this deductible obligation is unavoidable. It applies to any type of medical expense. No matter what type of care, they will have to pay the same expense.

This means if you are going to get healthcare, then you can’t avoid paying your deductible somewhere.  Hospitals and large doctor offices often ask for payments in advance.  In our Dumont office, even with high deductible insurance we can still help.  By keeping our fees affordable and arranging payment plans, we can almost always work a manageable plan for you

If you are struggling with a health issue like back pain, neck pain or headaches, don’t let “deductible doubts” stop you from getting the care you need. Call us at 201-387-7463 so we can help.

Why Do I Do It?

I can be a bit introspective at times and occasionally have even wondered how I ended up in my profession.  Happily, I never had to question if becoming a chiropractor was good decision.

Contemplating my life, chiropractic and health

Contemplating my life, chiropractic and health

When I was young, I hurt my back and went to a chiropractor for help.  Later, I went to chiropractic college because I thought being a doctor would be a good career.  Also, I hoped to make a good living.  More than 30 years later, I have learned a few things.  First, this job is much harder than I expected.  Second, there are easier ways in the world to make a living.  Third and most importantly, I also learned the reasons chiropractic was the perfect choice for me.

When a patient came in with back pain and told me that she can no longer play with her kids, I truly sympathized.  I am a dad and know how precious time is with your child.   A month later, when I saw her running with her children at a local playground, I watched and felt part of the joy she was experiencing.  When someone who suffered 3 or 4 migraines a week happily told me that for the first time in several years they had been free of headaches for 2 weeks, I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.

A few years ago, the husband of a patient stopped me while I was out at a local community fair.  Prior to coming to me, his wife had been in pain for a long time and it was affecting their relationship.  He said he wanted to thank me for giving his wife back to him and his daughter.  Knowing how I contributed to them almost brought me to tears.

Over my years in practice, there have been hundreds of patients who have had life changing experiences.  People who have come to me with conditions like sciatica, neck pain, back pain and other disabilities or illnesses, have all recovered.  Many have avoided taking harmful medications or having dangerous surgeries by instead choosing The Back Care Center for chiropractic care.

My reasons for being a chiropractor have changed since I first started school.  Now every life I have touched and changed is a reason for me to be happy.  My life changes with my patients’ successes.

If you or someone you know and love is suffering and looking for a solution to their pains, give us a call at 201-387-7463.  Let’s find out if we can help.

Why Did Your Chiropractor Take X-rays?

Chiropractic and X-rays

I have been a chiropractor for over 30 years and have been at The “Back Care Center” in Dumont since 1990.  In all those years I have seen thousands of patients from areas like Bergenfield, New Milford, Cresskill and Tenafly.  With almost all of them, I either took spinal x-rays myself or saw x-rays taken by another doctor.

Being honest, some of my patients don’t want x-rays. While I understand their concerns, I usually insist they are done, because it is in the best interest of the patient.  X-rays are an important diagnostic tool and there have been so many patients whose findings significantly alter their treatment path.

In most people we find some bio-mechanical issues.  These usually confirm what we suspected from the initial examination.  However, in some there are things like infections, severe degenerative arthritis, fractures and even cancers.  Without taking this extra step of x-rays, we would never have known of other underlying health issues and it would have delayed them receiving appropriate treatment.

Even in patients without severe findings, their x-rays help to determine our plan and the length of their treatment.

Some offices don’t take x-rays.  They say the insurance companies don’t want you to x-ray the patient right away.  Others think, I can always x-ray the patient later.  My answer is, I don’t treat insurance companies, I treat patients.  To provide safe and effective care, I want all the information before I put my hands on someone’s spine.

My suggestion to anyone who has things like back pain, sciatica, neck pain or headaches is to find a chiropractor.  We are very effective at helping these types of issues.  My other suggestion is never let a chiropractor who doesn’t do a full evaluation, including x-rays, touch your spine.  If you would like more information about chiropractic care, call us at The Back Care Center at 201-387-7463.
