Frequent Headaches Are Not Normal – Chiropractic Can Help!

Image of woman with frequent headache that could be treated with chiropractic adjustments

I have written about this before but as a result of some recent experiences, I thought it would be worth revisiting the topic. Headaches are one of the most common reasons for visits to the medical doctor. Millions of dollars are spent on medication for them every year. They are also one of the reasons that many people seek help in a chiropractic office.

The pain from headaches can be severe, but most are not due to a disease like a tumor or high blood pressure. Instead they are typically from physical, chemical or emotional stresses. The medical approach is usually some type of drug to mask the symptoms without ever considering why the problem is occurring.

Recently I had two new patients come in seeking help with headaches. One of them started care, was seeing improvement but also saw a neurologist who told them they should discontinue chiropractic care, take more medication and try exercising. (The patient also had a lower back problem that we were working on which made exercise very difficult.) He didn’t care that the patient was seeing improvement and sadly convinced them not to continue doing what was already helping.

Another patient, also with chronic headaches, had a similar experience. Her pain was so bad that it affected her home life and work. After two adjustments her headaches were almost totally gone. Her primary physician also saw her. He told her that there was nothing wrong. Fortunately, she realized that having almost daily headaches was not normal. She continued with care and is working to correct the cause of her headaches.

I have had hundreds of patients come to the office for relief of their headache pain. Our approach is to examine them, determine the cause and see if it can be helped with a combination of life style changes, nutritional support and chiropractic adjustments. Based upon the relief our patients report, I can tell you, we are very successful with our tactic.

Frequent headaches are not normal. Controlling them with medication doesn’t help you to fix the problem and the side effects can be horrible. Instead of covering up the symptoms with medication every day, find out what is causing the problem. Give us a call so we can help.

The Back Care Center is located in Dumont, NJ and we see patients from our surrounding towns including Bergenfield, Bogota, Closter, Cresskill, Englewood, Harrington Park, New Milford, Ridgefield Park, Teaneck and Tenafly. Call us at 201-387-7463 to schedule an appointment today.

Stay in the Race – How Chiropractic Adjustments Can Help

Stay in the race with Chiropractic adjustments like my patients did at the Spartan Race shown here

Last weekend there was a “Spartan Race” in Killington, Vermont. For those who are not familiar with this type of race, there are obstacles along the way like walls to get over, fire to jump, water to cross, hills to climb and things to carry. This particular race is hardest of all the Spartan events, was about 15 miles long and is called “The Beast”.

These races have become very popular and I know lots of people who are doing them, including many of my patients. Two of them came to me last week. Less than a week before the race something happened to them. One had severe lower back pain and the other had middle back and shoulder pain. Both of them were very concerned because they felt the pain was so bad that they might not be able to do the race.

Luckily, I was able to get them moving and out of pain with a couple of chiropractic adjustments and they both finished in good form. I was so excited when I learned of their results. They had trained very hard for the race and being able to help them get out there and reach their goal is one reason I love being a chiropractor.

Helping athletes is fun, and over the years I have helped people with injuries from activities like bike riding to golfing to football. But for me, helping ANYONE get back to doing something they love and want to do is thrilling. Things like, gardening, taking care of a family, cooking and working are just as important as finishing a race or winning the next football game.

Chiropractic care really is for everyone and is frequently exactly what is needed to help people get over the hills and hurdles that life can throw at us. If you or someone you know needs some help getting back to something they love, give us a call at 201-387-7463 at the Back Care Center of Dumont, NJ so we can help them too.

Do You Have Goals for Your Health?

couple on bicycles living healthy lifestyle

Last week I was doing a re-evaluation on a patient. She had been doing very well, her pain was gone and I was focused on moving her to the next stage of her care. We were sitting and speaking but after a very short time, it became apparent that she didn’t really have any health goals and just figured if “she wasn’t sick or in pain, that should be good enough.”

Her revelation was shocking to me. We all have health-related challenges. I just assumed that everyone sees the benefits of overcoming those issues and works towards that goal. When I suggested that she should take more control of her health and set some health related goals, she looked at me as if I was speaking another language. “Why would I need to have health goals?” she asked.

I had a personal realization after speaking with her. My attitude about health is so different than most because it comes from my perspective after 26 years taking care of people. I have seen the emotional, physical and financial costs of neglecting your health. There have been so many patients who have come to me over the years and lots of them ONLY came in when they were sick or in pain. Those same people almost always come back to me in the future with the same problems or something closely related.

Things like arthritis, back pain, neck pain, herniated or bulging discs all become much more severe if all you treat is the pain. Regular chiropractic care is critical to minimizing future damage. Also, taking long-term action on your own by eating right, exercising and sleeping enough makes huge a difference.

My suggestion for everyone is to have goals for your health. Plan what you are going to do every week and do your best to stick to the plan. Remember the benefits from this approach are less pain, fewer injuries and more time to live the life you want.

If you need help setting your own personal health goals, please give us a call.

How Diet Contributes to Arthritis Pain

How Diet Contributes to Arthritis, from The Back Care Center of Dumont, NJThere are many different types of arthritis but most of us don’t care if it is degenerative or autoimmune arthritis. It’s the pain and stiffness that gets our attention. As the condition goes on, joints become swollen and inflamed and any type of movement or activity can become difficult

Medical treatment has been the same for years. Treat the swollen joints with drugs like steroids or “NSAIDs” and hope for the best. The problem is that nobody tries to find out why the problem has happened and, over time, the effects of those drugs can make the problems worse.

So why do your joints get swollen? One reason is that many people have hypersensitive immune systems. Your own defense system is so revved up that the slightest irritation triggers a very strong reaction. Since about 95% of your immune system is in your gut, your diet is an important key to controlling the problem.

Eating healthy foods like fruits and vegetables will nourish your body and improve healing. However, eating the wrong foods like wheat, processed sugar and dairy can irritate your immune system causing inflammation and lead to joint and muscle pain. You don’t even have to be suffering with belly problems for it to happen.

In our office we correct mechanical problems of the spine by using chiropractic adjustments and therapeutic exercises. Fixing the mechanical cause of irritation helps to get rid of your pain and restore your health. But looking at what foods (and sometimes drugs) patients are putting into their body is an important part of treatment and is why our arthritis patients get great results.

If you are having problems with arthritis and want help, call The Back Care Center today.

Your Spine Is Not Static

Spine and back pain at The Back Care Center of Dumont, NJNothing about your health stays the same. It is in a constant state of flux, improving or degrading, depending upon both internal and external factors. This continuous change can be frustrating for people. So many times I have been asked by both patients and friends, “Why is my back hurting again? I thought we fixed it!”

The big answer is that nature doesn’t allow anything to stay static. Everything is constantly in motion. The world around you and the one inside you are always changing. On a personal level, if those changes are positive, they will create an improved state of health. That means less pain and illness. But if they are destructive changes it can lead to illness, pain and breakdowns in your ability have the type of life you want.

To those of you who have done something for your spine but it doesn’t seem to be enough, I would encourage you to be patient. Keep doing the things which lead to better health and you will see the results.

To those of you who have worked on your health before, seen positive changes but then stopped doing what was working (exercise, regular chiropractic adjustments, changes in your diet), don’t be surprised. The work needed for being healthy doesn’t stop when you feel good. It goes on for a lifetime.

If you would like to know how we can help you keep your health keep moving in a positive direction, please give us a call here at The Back Care Center of Dumont, NJ.

My Commitment To You For 2013

Let’s face it, 2012 was a bit of a rough ride! Between the weather, a difficult economy and a disappointing showing of our local baseball and football teams, most of us aren’t going to be too sad to see last year go into the history books.

So bring on 2013! I am personally committing this year to do what I can to make it better for all of my patients!

MOST IMPORTANTLY, we are going to keep being the best place for you to come to get out of pain fast, without taking drugs. But I promise, we are not stopping there. This year I am going to make it a point to be in touch more often with the most up-to-date information about your health.

Besides continuing with our Facebook Page, Twitter and this blog , we also have added a whole lot more. First thing for you is our “Weekly Update”. We also have our monthly “In Good Hands” newsletter. Finally, check out our new, second blog at DrDavidSchwartzBlog.com. Every week we update that blog with an article about a specific condition like lower back pain, neck pain or headaches.

You are probably wondering why I am providing you with so much information. Well, I’ve said it many times in the past and I am not changing my tune in 2013: the government and the insurance companies don’t care if you are sick or in pain! It is up to you to know how to stay healthy and pain-free. By providing you with the most up-to-date and practical information available, I want to help you do just that.

I am looking forward to this coming year and wish for it to be healthy and prosperous and pain-free.

Should You Exercise When You’re Sick?

The choice to exercise or not sometimes depends on the sickness or disease. Our bodies work harder and use more energy when we are fighting an illness. If symptoms are above the neck (sore throat, runny nose), it is probably okay to exercise.

You should not exercise if you have body aches, fever, diarrhea or vomiting, shortness of breath or chest congestion, dizziness or light-headedness. In other words, if you have the Flu, stay in bed!

If you’re sick but still want to exercise, simply reduce your intensity and duration. When resuming your regular exercise routine, try starting with 50% effort and 50% duration.

And of course, if you are sick, make sure you come into the Back Care Center of Dumont, NJ for a chiropractic adjustment. It will help your immune system fight off whatever is attacking your system.

Life goes on after the pain is gone!

couple on bicycles living healthy lifestyle

People never stop surprising me. Some patients wait in pain for days, weeks or even months before they come to me for help. When they finally make an appointment, the reason for their delay was that someone had told them, “Once you start seeing a chiropractor, you have to go forever!”

I can tell you that no two patients are really alike, but we can group them into three general categories. The first group wants nothing more than to get out of pain fast. The second group is looking for an overall improvement in their vitality. They not only get adjusted but also work on all other aspects of their health. The third group is a combination of the first two. They want to get out of pain but also want to enjoy the benefits longer-term chiropractic care can provide. They come in periodically to check and maintain their spine.

I take care of all three types of patients. While certain issues like a herniated disc may require longer term care, typically patients get out of pain relatively fast. If they are in the first group I described and want to stop after their pain is relieved, there is no “penalty.” They go back to their life and hopefully back to doing the things they love. I am thrilled to have helped them get what they wanted, and if they ever need me again, they are always welcome to come into the office.

If you are suffering with neck pain, back pain or sciatica, or know someone else who is, please let us help. Give us a call today. The sooner we get started, the sooner the pain will be gone.
